We all have a little wanderlust in us. That urge to go out and explore the world, eat different foods, and embrace different cultures. I would argue that traveling is a necessity for all people, and everyone should do it. Over my lifetime of traveling, I have almost perfected the process of going off and exploring a new place. My advice may not be what you are expecting… it all starts with the preparation. I have learned that perhaps the most important thing about traveling is preparation. Below are some of the things seasoned travelers must do before going on vacation:
Take Care of Security Before Leaving
For some travelers, leaving their homes would mean that no one will be there to keep watch. Therefore, taking the necessary steps to ensure that everything is secure will always remain at the top of their to-do lists before taking their leave. They will make sure that the locks are working, the alarm is set, and all the electric appliances are unplugged from their sockets.
They will also switch off the power from the main switch and take care of all the taps in and around the house to ensure that water doesn’t flood the place while they are gone. Surveillance is also important, and that’s why some smart travelers invest in wireless security cameras, which can be moved and positioned in blind spots. Not only are they inexpensive, but they also don’t need wires. On top of that, the footage is usually crystal clear.
Update Your Visa and Passport
To be on the safe side, make a habit of renewing your passport about nine months before it officially expires. That said, it would be in your best interest to make a habit of checking your passport and visa to ensure that it hasn’t clocked past the expiration date. Experienced travelers usually do this way before their next adventure so that they can be on the safe side while avoiding the hustle that comes with doing this last minute.
It takes up to a month and a half for the passport application to go through. However, if you are really in need of it to go through much sooner, then it’ll cost you, which is precisely why seasoned travelers make such arrangements early to avoid wasting resources that would have otherwise been used during their vacation.
It would also be in your best interest to make copies of your visa and passport, packing them in different bags. This is very important as it will help you in case you end up losing your documents. You can also save the soft copies online for emergency purposes. The latter might sound extreme, but that’s precisely how you should handle such matters.
Get The Necessary Vaccinations
As part of their research, seasoned travelers always make a point of studying the diseases that are prone to their destination. Moreover, once they’ve established this, they will ensure that they have visited their doctors for vaccination shots. Finding the relevant information is easy, since all they have to do is visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, which will have everything that they need.
Keep an Eye Out for Travel Advisories and Warnings
Unfortunately, most newbie travelers often let their sheer excitement overshadow this one crucial aspect of pre-vacation preparation. When traveling in a different country, it is essential to check on the travel advisories and warnings lest you find yourself in the middle of a war-torn country. In this case, make the internet your best friend since you can find all the contents that you need right there. You can also do one better by keeping up with the news.
You may think planning out what you are going to do at your destination would be the most important part. Yet, being a self-proclaimed “seasoned traveler,” I have found that as long as you have the aforementioned things checked off of your list, everything else works out smoothly. So, do these things and then enjoy your next adventure!
